CPSC: About 13,000 Americans Injured by Christmas Décor Every Year

December 7, 2009

Washington - Christmas décors injure about 13,000 people every year, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said Sunday.

Despite the high number of accidents caused by decorations, the CPSC has not issued a formal warning or recall over certain products.

However, CPSC Nikki Fleming has warned parents from using heavy stocking hanger, which is one of the most popular Christmas decors for the past several years. According to reports, at least 20 children were injured by this product last year, including a 2-year-old Los Angeles boy who pulled a stocking holder which fell on his face, causing a deep puncture between his eyes.

“If there are children around, parents should not use this particular decoration”, Fleming said.

Meanwhile, retail giant Target Co., one of the biggest sellers of weighted stock hangers in the US, said it did not receive any complaints from consumers this year. However, the company declined to provide records of consumer complaints filed during the previous years.
