CPSC Links 7 More Infant Deaths to Simplicity Cribs

December 18, 2009

Washington - After the recall of more than 2 million Simplicity cribs, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received seven more infant deaths linked to the products, pushing the number of fatalities to 11.

The CPSC said the most recent death happened in September when a 7-month-old baby was trapped in a space between the crib’s drop-side and mattress and died from suffocation.

In a press release, the consumer agency reiterated its warning to parents on using the recalled cribs which have also been linked to dozens of injuries.

“Parents should not attempt to fix any defect on their Simplicity cribs, instead, they should immediately return these to the retailers for a refund”, the CPSC added.

Since December 2005, the CPSC has recalled Simplicity cribs which have a drop-side that may detach, creating a space between the mattress and the collapsible side where babies may be trapped and die from suffocation.

Some of the recalled cribs have a Winnie the Pooh motif and Graco logo.
