Caltrans Agrees to $1.1 B Settlement in Inequality Charges
December 22, 2009
Sacramento - Disabled rights advocates and state officials have agreed to a $1.1 billion worth of work to provide the disabled with equal access to all public transportation, reports said.
In a statement released by Caltrans, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also expressed his delight in providing all taxpayers and the disabled with sidewalks and other equipments that would help them access all Department of Transportation facilities.
The settlement resulted from a lawsuit alleging denial of access to public transportation to the disabled filed by Californians for Disability Rights, Dmitri Belser, Ben Rockwell, and California Council of the Blind against Caltrans.
The work that should improve and grant access to pedestrians and the disabled is agreed to take place within thirty years and is expected to commence not earlier than April of 2010 after the Federal Court’s approval.
