Bicycle accident: LA Mayor Villaraigosa injured in bicycle accident

Los Angeles - The mayor of Los Angeles has sustained injuries on his right elbow following a bicycle accident at 8627 Venice Boulevard on Saturday at 6:50 p.m.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was cycling near Hervey and Hargis streets when a taxi cab pulled in front of him, causing him to lose control on the brakes and trip over.

Police authorities are still investigating possible charges for the taxi driver. Mayor Villaraigosa commented that the driver failed to give signal upon making the turn.

The mayor's security team transported him to Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center. He underwent surgery for his right elbow on Sunday and has been in recovery.

The accident has prompted safety organizations to campaign for bicycle law amendment. They are proposing to hold a motorist liable for causing an accident even though there is no direct contact with the bicycle rider. They are suggesting imposing stricter penalties when such motorist failed to stop and help the injured cyclist.

The proposal includes provision for special bike lanes with added safety features to prevent hazards caused by other motorists.
