EMPLOYMENT LAW: Largest Union in San Francisco Refuses to Take Furlough Days
April 30, 2010
San Francisco - The Service Workers International Union (SEIU) has refused to take around 12 furlough days next year, intensifying the city’s threat that they will be forced to work in part-time positions.
Reports said the union, which represents around 13,000 city employees, still refused to take the furlough days though most unions already agreed to it.
If the union will not change its decision, the city may be forced to transfer unfurloughed employees to part-time positions just to end a $570 million budget deficit.
These workers will be required to work in positions that will only allow them to work for about 37 ½ hours.
The city already sent notices to around 1,600 members of SEIU, reports said.
