TRUCK ACCIDENT: Mojave Desert Racing's permit suspended after fatal truck accident

August 20, 2010

San Bernardino County - Mojave Desert Racing's events were suspended after a fatal truck accident on Lucerne Valley, killing eight spectators on Saturday.

The Bureau of Land Management barred organizers of the racing event from holding future races until the investigation for the crash has been completed, reports said.

At least eight spectators were killed and nine others were injured when a truck contestant crashed onto the crowd. The truck was a participant in the 200-mile racing event when it lost control on the wheels.

The Bureau of Land Management has not cited the truck driver of any charges yet.

Federal officials are still investigating safety violations of Mojave Desert Racing (MDR).

MDR is supposed to conduct five more races within this year. California Highway Patrol officers also said that MRD is supposed to implement a 100-feet distance from the 50-mile racing course.

Photos from the accident scene showed spectators within feet from the actual truck racing course.
