Nestle Recalls Cookie Dough over E. Coli Scare
June 19, 2009
San Francisco, California - Multinational food company Nestle announced a recall on its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that these could be linked in 65 cases of E. coli contamination in 29 states.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) initial investigation, eating the raw cookie dough has predisposed people from E. coli bacteria which cause severe diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and abdominal cramp. In some serious cases, the bacteria can result to kidney fatal and eventual death.
While only 25 people across the US have been hospitalized and there is no reported fatality, doctors warned that consumers should throw away the said products to avoid any health problem.
E. coli can be easily eliminated when the cookie dough is properly baked or cooked, but FDA said the bacteria can contaminate kitchen utensils and surfaces.
Meanwhile, Nestle announced that it temporarily stopped producing Toll House products including Ultimates Cookie Bar Dough, Limited Edition Cookie Dough, Cookie Dough Tub, Cookie Bar Dough, and Seasonal Cookie Dough.
