Prosecutors Say Dad Will Not Face Charges in Son's Death
June 16, 2009
El Cerrito, California - A man who accidentally left his 4-month-old son inside his car for a whole day will not face any charge after prosecutors decided that the death of the infant is a tragic accident and involved no real intention of killing him.
In an interview with MercuryNews.com, Deputy District Attorney Harold Jewett said the circumstances showed that it was a tragic accident that cost the infant’s life.
On June 8, Alan Carey forgot to drop off his son Everett to a day care center and went directly to his office, leaving the infant inside the car for a whole day.
Police said Carey’s wife went to his work at around 5:30 pm after she found out that their son was not in the day care center. When she arrived, the mother found the baby unresponsive inside the car and immediately called 911.
The infant was brought to a hospital but was pronounced dead, according to police report.
According to police, the infant might have died due to heat stroke as temperature can rise inside car parks especially when the vehicle’s windows and doors are closed.
The result of the autopsy, which can identify the cause of the infant’s death, has not yet been released, authorities said.
