July 8, 2010

Irwindale – At least 4,200 bags of spinach salads by Irwindale-based Ready Pac Foods is being recalled after a random test by FDA investigators yielded positive results about the presence of E. coli last night.

The product recall was initiated by the company and included 702 cases, each containing 6 six-ounce bags of the Spinach Temptations line of salads.

The product recall affects the products with a July 4 use-by date and with product codes I1707B, IR127121, and to products that have July 8 use-by date and code I2007B, IR130373.

The spinach salads are sold across California, Arizona and Washington.

A spokesperson from Ready Pac Inc. said that the presence of E. coli was discovered after FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) investigators tested a bag of the spinach salad mix y that was taken from a random store shelf last Tuesday.

The spokesperson also clarified that there were no reports of illnesses related to the incident.

Ready Pac Foods Inc. has been involved in other product recalls for E. coli presence before.

In 2006, their brand was among those pulled out from stores by the FDA due to an E. coli outbreak, which was traced to a plant that bags their spinach and in the same year, the company was also identified as Taco Bell’s supplier of scallions that was involved in another suspected E. coli outbreak.

FDA has not released any statement about the recall as of the moment.
