Social Security Spouse Benefits
The Social Security Administration (SSA) not only protects the American worker, but also its spouses as well through Social Security Spouse Benefits. In certain circumstances, a spouse of a worker can get these benefits when:
- the spouse is age 62 or older, unless he/she collects a higher social security benefit based on his or her record of earnings. The spousal benefit amount will then be permanently reduced by a certain amount based on the number of months leading up to his or her full retirement age.
- at any age he or she is caring for your child under age 16 or disabled under age 22 and receiving social security benefits. The spouse will continue receiving the benefits until the child reaches 16 years of age. At that point, the child's social security benefits will still continue, but social security spouse benefits will stop until he or she is old enough to receive retirement or survivor benefits.
- Principally, the amount of benefits that the spouse will receive is one-half of the retired worker's full benefits. But then the spouse can also begin collecting benefits before its full age of retirement, in which case the amount of spouse benefits will be permanently reduced by a certain percentage as determined by the number of months before he/she reaches full age of retirement. Say, the spouse would like to know how much benefit he/she can collect before age 65, the bracket would then be:
- 46% of the retired worker's full benefit at age 64,
- 42% at age 63, and
- 37.5% at age 62.
