Supplemental Security Income Claim

Supplemental Security Income Claim benefits are given to individuals who have low-level income and disabled, regardless if he/she worked in the past or not. It can also be extended to children under 18 years old who are disabled and whose parents also earn low-level income. This initiative is covered under Title XVI of the Social Security Act.

It was originally known as the Old Age Pension Act. When President Franklin D. drafted and passed the act to the Congress, it was then renamed to what it is known today as the Social Security Act of 1935. Aside from retirees and old-age pensioners, the Social Security Act also provides income for the disabled who have limited income and resources.

In order to be eligible for getting supplemental security income, you must meet the qualifications and definitions of medical disability as defined by the Social Security Administration. Generally, a person "must be unable to do any substantial gainful activity due to any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to last for at least 12 months, or which can result to death.

To prove your entitlement for a supplemental security income claim, you must support your claim by qualifying under the "Listing Level of Impairments" as outlined by the Social Security Adminsitration, and qualifying under the SSA's sequential evaluation rules for determining disability. More information about these can be found on this link: http://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/.
